It was one of the most difficult and nerve-wracking decisions you ever made, but you’re glad you did it. After years to decades of fruitless diets, and an increase in the presence or risk of serious health conditions — such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke — you made the right choice for your future. You underwent bariatric surgery and now, finally, you’ve attained a healthy weight.
You’re thrilled and relieved, and so are your loved ones. But as much of an accomplishment as it is to finally be at a weight that allows all of your organs, muscles, and bones to functional optimally, you’re now faced with a dilemma: Extra skin. And, despite your massive weight loss, you still have stubborn pockets of fat.
The Finishing Touches
Bariatric surgery — whether it was gastric bypass or another weight-loss surgery — is a medical procedure designed to improve your health and increase your chances for a longer life. As important as that is, it’s not the full picture. In addition to wanting optimal health, you also want to achieve your aesthetic ideals so that you can feel confident and attractive.
Julio Garcia, MD, understands that impulse toward beauty. Before he trained as a plastic surgeon, he earned his bachelor’s degree in Art History. The journey toward self-improvement and self-actualization, with an emphasis on aesthetic harmony and balance, is partly what led him to become one of the best plastic surgeons in Vegas.
Contour Your Curves
Genetically determined fat deposits under your chin, or around your abdomen, hips, thighs, and arms won’t respond to diet or exercise — or bariatric surgery. If you still have areas of fat that you’d like to permanently remove, Dr. Garcia recommends liposuction or ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty. You can choose either plastic surgery in Las Vegas, Nevada to remove and re-contour:
- Double chin
- Spare tire
- Muffin top
- Love handles
- Hip fat
- Thigh fat
- Upper arm fat
- Back fat
Today’s tumescent liposuction is a far cry from the old liposuction procedures, which sometimes led to “lumpy” results. Dr. Garcia first injects the treatment area with a solution that breaks up fat, controls bleeding, and dulls pain. He then uses very small cannulas (metal straws) to remove your excess fat beautifully and uniformly.
If you wish, you can choose ultrasound assisted lipoplasty for extra ease and finer detailing. The ultrasound waves further break up the fat to facilitate removal.
Although liposuction is an outpatient surgical procedure, you still will have a recovery period. The anesthesia — whether general or twilight — will make you drowsy, so you should have someone drive you home after your procedure. You should also arrange for help and time off from work so that you don’t have any responsibilities for at least a week or two.
If you’re a man with gynecomastia, or a woman whose breasts have fallen or deflated after weight loss, Dr. Garcia may recommend a breast reduction or breast lift. Even though bariatric surgery may improve gynecomastia (male breasts), sometimes the excess tissue isn’t actually fat, but breast tissue. Dr. Garcia removes the unnecessary breast tissue and re-positions your breasts to a more masculine position.
If you’re a woman who needs a breast lift, Dr. Garcia repositions your breasts and nipples to a higher, more youthful position. In both cases, he tightens and trims away extra skin.
Tighten and Tuck
While getting rid of that last bit of extra fat may be a relief, if you have loose, inelastic skin or large amounts of redundant skin, Dr. Garcia may be able to help by tightening and trimming away the excess.
One of the most popular procedures after bariatric surgery is a tummy tuck. This surgery does more than make your tummy and waist look trimmer and tauter. It actually tightens your stretched-out abdominal muscles, giving you a leaner, potentially stronger abdominal area.
Women who are ready for a full-body makeover can also choose a “Mommy Makeover.” A mommy makeover is designed for your own particular needs. Common procedures include liposuction, tummy tuck, and breast lift.
If your skin is elastic and your weight loss not too dramatic, it may be that you only have small amounts of lax skin. In these cases, Dr. Garcia may be able to help tighten and tone your skin with laser toning, especially if it’s your face that needs a new, more uplifted look. Laser toning actually improves the quality of treated skin by stimulating the production of healthier new collagen and elastin, which are proteins that give skin its strength and flexibility.
Know the Risks
As with bariatric surgery, tummy tucks, lipoplasty, and breast reduction are all surgeries that have potential complications. Though you may be eager to put the final touches on your figure, be sure that you understand the risks involved and get clearance from your physician.
When you meet with Dr. Garcia to find out how you can achieve your ideal figure, he’ll explain each procedure in detail and also lay out possible complications. He takes time to answer your questions. He also shares with you his recommendations so that you don’t get unnecessary procedures. For instance, if you’re a woman thinking about breast augmentation, he suggests you start with a breast lift, first, since his breasts lifts are so flattering that many women feel that their new, more youthful breast position gives them the look they want.
Dr. Garcia also discusses how much help you’ll need after surgery, and whether a private recovery suite might best suit your needs. If you’re coming from out of town, his staff help you arrange accommodations and other things you require for a safe and satisfying outcome and recovery while working with a top Vegas plastic surgeon.
