Julio Garcia MD, an expert plastic surgeon in Las Vegas, is also the founder and medical director of the cutting-edge Regenerative Medicine Institute of Nevada (RMIN). At RMIN, Dr. Garcia and his team offer breakthrough therapies using cell therapies including adult-derived stem-cell therapy. Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that are present in your fat and bone marrow. Stem cells can morph into other types of cells to help your body heal and regrow tissue.
The RMIN also offers platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, derived from your own arm blood, and therapies with donated umbilical Wharton’s jelly therapy. All procedures at RMIN are considered to be in clinical trial and are not yet covered by insurance. Dr. Garcia has performed cell therapy since 2013. He conducts a thorough examination to determine if you’re a good candidate.
Stem Cells from Your Own Fat
A pioneer in the use of autologous (self-donated) adult stem cells to treat degenerative illnesses and chronic pain, Dr. Garcia and his team harvest mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from your excess adipose tissue (i.e. fat), rather than from bone marrow, as many other regenerative medicine centers do. Adipose tissue has up to 2,500 times more stem cells than bone marrow, and can be extracted in a simple liposuction procedure performed under local anesthesia. In contrast, bone-marrow harvests are riskier as they require more invasive surgery with general anesthesia.
Stem cells are specialized cells that can differentiate themselves into many other types of cells, including:
- Blood vessels
- Smooth muscle
It’s Not Fat Grafting
Although your fat can be extracted and used to rejuvenate aging skin and restore lost facial volume — a process known as fat grafting — the stem cells in regenerative medicine are derived from the material between your fat cells, not the fat itself. Thanks to a breakthrough technology, the fatty portions and blood in the extracted fat are separated from what’s termed the stromal vascular fraction (SVF), which contains multiple MSCs, growth factors, macrophages, endothelial cells, and red blood cells.
The team at RMIN uses the MSCs in the SVF to treat a variety of medical conditions, including:
- Interstitial Cystitis (painful bladder syndrome) —repair damaged nerves and muscles
- Asthma — relax reactive airways
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) —reduce the loss of elasticity of the lungs and reverse small airway damage
- Osteoarthritis — helps regrow degenerated cartilage
Stem-cell therapy also helps regenerate nerves to treat a variety of neurological conditions, including:
- Multiple sclerosis
- Muscular dystrophy
- Parkinson’s disease
- Peripheral neuropathy
Cell Therapy Can Help You Avoid Surgery
If you suffer from chronic pain, you may be on long-term medications including painkillers and steroids, that have serious side effects. Your doctor may have recommended surgery as the only alternative to a lifetime of medications. At RMIN, you can receive regenerative cell therapy to treat pain in your:
- Plantar fasciitis
Rather than just subduing the sensation of pain, as painkillers do, or causing further damage, as some surgeries might, cell therapy potentially reverses the disease process. The stem cells in SVF help heal damaged tissues. PRP stimulate regrowth in tendons and ligaments, and repair bone fractures. Depending on your injury and degree of debilitation, you may benefit from SVF therapy, PRP, or a combination.
Reduce the Suffering of Autoimmune Diseases
Autoimmune diseases are those in which your immune system goes awry and begins to attack your own healthy tissues, rather than targeting invasive organisms. Cell therapy helps subdue the immune response, and quell the inflammation that creates uncomfortable, painful, and potentially life-threatening symptoms.
At RMIN, the team uses cell therapies to treat:
- Autoimmune hepatitis
- Crohn’s disease
- Lupus erythematosus
- Myasthenia gravis
- Relapsing polychodritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
Resolve Embarrassing Conditions
Although hair loss is considered a normal part of aging, nobody enjoys going bald. Past therapies for hair loss either require ongoing medications or painful hair transplants. But at RMIN, we offer PRP to repair damaged follicles and regrow hair. Within 12 months, you’ll have healthy, permanent hair in areas that were previously bald or sparse.
Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a skin disorder that can affect women, men, and children of all ages, but is most commonly seen in postmenopausal women. Symptoms include smooth, shiny skin around the genitals and anus, accompanied by crusty or blistery spots. Some people also experience itching, bleeding, and skin-color changes. Rather than invasive surgery or long-term medication, the RMIN team recommend local and intravenous SVF along with PRP.
You Become Your Own Medicine
At RMIN, most or all of your therapy is derived from the healing powers of your own body. Your platelets, MSCs, and growth factors stimulate your body to regenerate damaged tissues, organs, and bones to help your body recover mobility, strength, and wellness.
All of the therapies at RMIN are simple and only take a few hours from start to finish. When Dr. Garcia harvests MSCs from your excess fat, he simply numbs the harvest area (buttocks, hips, thighs, or abdomen) and removes about 50 cc of fat through liposuction. The harvesting procedure only takes about 20 minutes.
Donating your own blood for PRP is even simpler. After disinfecting your arm, Dr. Garcia or an assistant draws a small amount of blood. The process is similar to that of giving blood for a blood test.
The RMIN team don’t need long to process your fat or blood into effective therapies. With PRP, for instance, it only takes about 12 minutes to centrifuge your blood and separate out the high-powered platelets, which are full of growth factors and stem cells.
Your treatment itself usually takes no more than one to three hours, depending on your condition. Using just local anesthetic to numb the treatment areas and keep you comfortable, Dr. Garcia injects the cell therapy directly into the tissue, organ, muscle, or bone that’s being treated.
Because cell therapy is made from your own cells, your body won’t reject it. You also can’t have an allergic reaction. Side effects are usually related to the injections themselves, such as soreness or temporary swelling or bruising.
