These days, when it comes to how you look, you just can't win for losing. Thanks to social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, everyone from celebrities to ordinary janes and joes get “body shamed” for being too fat, too thin, too old, too “done,” wearing too much makeup or not enough, having too big a nose or too obvious a nose job. There are even sites devoted solely to confirming conjectures on which celebrities have gone under the knife – as if self-improvement were some sort of moral failing.

The feeding frenzy regarding how we are all “supposed” to look just goes to prove the old adage that you can't please everybody. And since you can't please everybody, the only person you should ever try to please – when it comes to your own body – is yourself. If you are happy and confident, yet still would like to improve some aspect of your appearance, there are more choices than ever that can help you become the “you” you know yourself to be.

Dr. Julio Garcia, a Las Vegas plastic surgeon based in Henderson NV, understands the importance of working toward your best self – both internally and externally. As an artist with a degree in art history as well as double-board certified plastic surgeon with many years of experience, Dr. Garcia believes that human beings are by nature problem solvers who are driven to create more harmony, beauty and simplicity in their lives. Sometimes this is accomplished by creating a work of art. Sometimes it's accomplished by finding ways to bring more balance and beauty to our own bodies through plastic surgery and other cosmetic procedures.

Saying Goodbye to Stigma: Loudly

One of the positive aspects of having public forums such as Instagram and Twitter where everyone from the President to grade school children can boldly trumpet their opinions is that when body shaming occurs, people talk back. Celebrities and regular folks now regularly call out the trolls who criticize their post-baby bodies, demean their appearance, or “accuse” them of having undergone elective cosmetic surgery.

And whereas in times past, celebrities routinely pretended that they'd been born with that perfect nose or chin, or had passed through the ravages of decades without a wrinkle or furrow, many of them now are perfectly comfortable sharing the truth about their past cosmetic procedures, or their latest anti-aging strategies.

You Don't Have to “Settle”

If you notice that your nose overpowers your face, or your thick ankles interfere with the otherwise shapely curves of your legs, or if the sags and bags of aging have made you look years older than you feel, you can take control of your appearance through a variety of surgical and nonsurgical options.

Deciding to make a positive change in your appearance can feel like a burden has been lifted. Seeing the beautiful results of your procedure can give you an extra boost of confidence. Some plastic surgeries and other cosmetic procedures even come with the added bonus of health benefits.

Following are some of the most popular ways Dr. Garcia can help you make the changes you want to be the you you've always dreamed of:

plastic surgery

Rhinoplasty (Nose job): If your nose is distracting from your other facial features, rhinoplasty can help bring your features into harmony. Whether your nose is long, droopy, crooked, bumpy or turned up, Dr. Garcia can help reshape it to better match your face and enhance your natural beauty. One of the benefits of rhinoplasty is that it can correct a deviated septum or other hindrances to healthy breathing.

Chin Augmentation: A chin that lacks projection can make your profile look weak and may worsen other features, such as a turkey neck. Chin implants can create a stronger, more masculine and/or confident jawline.

Cheek Augmentation: Across cultures, high cheekbones are regarded as a sign of beauty. If you feel your cheekbones need augmenting, you can choose from surgical cheek implants or nonsurgical options such as the injectable facial fillers Sculptra or Voluma. An extra benefit of cheek augmentation is that it can sometimes create a mini facelift to resolve mild lower-face drooping, jowling and neck sagging.

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid surgery): The eyes are the windows to the soul, but if they are shaded with sagging lids or encumbered by under-eye bags, their dazzling impact is diminished. Upper and lower eyelid surgery removes excess fat and skin, making your eyes look more youthful and alert. In some instances where drooping was extreme, it may even improve your eyesight.

Brow Lift: Sometimes it's not the eyelid skin that's causing your droopy eyes, but a forehead that's lost muscle tone. A browlift can lift your brows to a more youthful position and smooth out furrows, making you look more awake and engaged. Browlifts can also be done in conjunction with blepharoplasty for added rejuvenation.

Surgical and Nonsurgical Facelifts: A surgical facelift (rhytidectomy) is the procedure most strongly associated with anti-aging plastic surgery. But facelifts have advanced considerably from the early days of the windswept celebrity look. Dr. Garcia will work with your natural anatomy to replace your sagging face in two different directions for a natural lift, adding fat to re-create a youthful volume in your midface.

If you're not quite ready for a facelift, a surgical Mini Lift will correct sagging in the lower face, jowls and neck. Both full facelifts and mini lifts usually include a neck lift and plastysmaplasty to tighten the neck muscles, remove excess skin and create a cleaner jawline.

For those with early sagging or who would like to avoid surgery, nonsurgical facelifts are available with special lasers designed to tighten collagen and stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin to improve skin quality. Other means of addressing aging include injectable dermal fillers and neuromodulators.

Neck Lift and Plastysmaplasty: One of the most troubling signs of aging for both men and women is the dreaded “turkey neck.” Dr. Garcia can tighten the underlying platysma muscle, then tighten and remove excess skin to give you a more elongated and youthful neckline. This can be done as a discrete procedure or as part of a rhytidectomy.

Surgical and Nonsurgical Fat Removal: If you have been diligently watching what you eat and exercising regularly but still cannot lose stubborn pockets of fat, liposuction can help you sculpt your body to a more pleasing shape. In addition to treating traditional areas such as the abdomen, flanks, hips and thighs, liposuction can be used to sculpt ankles and knees to have more flattering contours. Double chins can be removed through facial liposuction or with the nonsurgical injectable Kybella.

For those who would like to remove protruding bellies with sagging skin, Dr. Garcia recommends a tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, with or without added liposuction. In addition to the cosmetic benefits, liposuction and abdominoplasty can make your body feel lighter and facilitate movement.

Breast Surgery: Almost no other feature of the body is more feminine than the breasts. If you would like a shapelier and/or more youthful figure, you can improve the look of your breasts through breast surgeries such as a breast lift, breast reduction, or breast augmentation with implants. Breast reduction surgery often results in improved posture and less discomfort.
