You’ve been considering breast augmentation for awhile now. You’ve weighed the pros and cons. And finally you’ve decided: You’re ready to achieve the womanly figure of your dreams.
But how do you know which kind of breast implants will create the beautiful curves you desire? And how do you know your dream breasts will look natural on you?
There are many types, sizes and shapes of breast implants that are available for your breast augmentation. It can be confusing to decide which ones will give you the results you want. That’s why choosing the right plastic surgeon is the first step toward a beautiful and natural-looking breast augmentation.
Dr. Julio Garcia is a Las Vegas plastic surgeon who is double board-certified in plastic surgery and also has a degree in Art History. He will bring both his surgical expertise and his finely developed sense of aesthetics to your augmentation procedure. During your consultation, he will measure your chest wall and breast width, take note of your overall shape, as well as discuss your hopes for your outcome. Together you will pick the breast implants that will be most flattering to your body type and satisfactory to you.
What Look Do You Want to Achieve?
Ask yourself a few questions about the type of breasts you imagine having. Look through magazines to find examples of the kind of figure you would like to achieve. If you are seeking an augmentation because of breast sagging and loss of volume due to aging or pregnancy, find some old photos of you when your breasts were still beautiful and full, and show them to your doctor.
You may also have issues that you’d like to correct, such as asymmetry in breast size, shape or position. You may want higher breasts. You may want a subtle change in volume or shape. Or you may want a dramatically fuller breast size. Maybe what you want more than anything is to finally have cleavage and to look good in your clothing.
The more information you take to your consultation, the more easily Dr. Garcia will be able to help you choose the ideal breast implant.
Following are descriptions of the various types, sizes and shapes of breast implants that are available to you and that you can discuss in more detail with your surgeon:
What Shape Do You Want Your New Breasts to Be?
Breast implants come in two basic shapes: teardrop or round. Each type is available in a variety of degrees of projection -- that is, how far the breast stands out from the chest.
Teardrop. Teardrop-shaped breast implants mimic the natural sloping contours of the breast, where the highest degree of fullness rests in the bottom of the breast. Teardrop implants are textured to prevent them from rotating and creating an unnatural shape. They usually look most natural when placed under the breast muscle. Placing them over the muscle in women with thin breast tissue runs the risk that the textured surface will be seen or felt.*
Round. Round implants are the most popular breast implant shape. They come in a large variety of projections, from low to high. Because they are symmetrical (i.e., they look the same on all sides), they don’t require a texture to hold them in place. Round breast implants can create dramatic cleavage, lift, and fullness.
How Do You Want Your New Breasts to Feel?
The type of filling you choose for your breast implant will affect the way they feel. Different materials also require different degrees of maintenance:
Silicone Filling. Silicone implants are filled with a soft silicone gel that feels very much like breast tissue. If an implant leaks, there’s a chance that the gel will enter the breast implant pocket. However, the implants will not collapse. Silicone implants must be monitored regularly with ultrasound or MRIs to assess their condition. They are FDA approved for women aged 22 years or older.
“Gummy Bear” Filling. Used with teardrop implants, this type of silicone gel is thicker than that found in traditional silicone implants. It holds its shape and yet remains “squishy” — like a gummy bear. Even if the shell ruptures, the “gummy bear” implant will stay in place rather than leaking into the body. Form-stable implants feel firmer than traditional silicone implants but run the risk of rotating into an unnatural position.
Saline Filling. These implants come deflated and are filled with sterile salt water after they have been positioned during surgery. This allows flexibility in the look and feel of the breast. If the implant shell ruptures, the saline is easily and safely absorbed by the body. They are FDA approved for women aged 18 years or older.
Structured Saline Filling. This type of saline implant features an inner structure that helps to make the implant feel softer and more natural.
How Big Do You Want Your New Breasts to Be?
Size matters, when it comes to breasts. Choosing a size that doesn’t match your body can result in a look that’s unnatural, unflattering, and even aging.
And while there is a common perception that men prefer larger breasts, scientific research has found that 90% of men and approximately 80% of women prefer breasts that are slightly fuller in the bottom than the top — which is known as a 45:55 ratio. Breasts at a 50:50 ratio — full, well-projected and symmetrically round — scored significantly lower across both sexes, all races, and all age groups.
While you may already have an idea of how much larger you’d like your breasts to be, during your consultation with Dr. Garcia, he will evaluate your figure and recommend the size that would be most flattering to your unique shape, while still giving you the added volume you want.
