Whether it’s just because of aging and gravity, or the added stresses of pregnancy and nursing or weight loss, your breasts aren’t as perky as they used to be. To try to keep a youthful position, you’ve begun using push-up bras and tightening your straps — just for the lift. These measures may salvage your figure in public, but when it’s time for more intimate moments, well … it’s not just your confidence that’s sagging.
If you’re feeling depressed by breasts that have lost volume, shape, height and projection, you are probably thinking about corrective plastic surgery. A breast lift in Las Vegas can restore your breasts to a higher, more youthful position and remove stretched-out, excess skin. Breast implants will create more beautifully rounded and lifted breasts that enhance the femininity of your figure. How do you decide what’s best for you?
Julio Garcia, MD, is a Las Vegas plastic surgeon who specializes in breast lifts and augmentations. In addition to being an expert surgeon, Dr. Garcia was trained as an artist and has a degree in Art History. His goal is to give you the improvements you want while still respecting your natural physique. Your rejuvenated or augmented breasts must harmonize with your overall shape so that you look balanced, feminine, beautiful and natural.
Breast Lift: The First Step
A breast lift, or mastopexy, is performed to lift and reposition sagging and drooping breasts, restoring them to a more youthful position and projection. Mastopexy can also be used to correct the position and/or shape of asymmetrical breasts.
Other plastic surgeons may prey on your insecurities when you are ready for breast surgery by attempting to oversell you services that you don’t need. Dr. Garcia’s commitment to aesthetics and natural beauty means that he never advises unnecessary surgery. In fact, even if you come to your consultation with a desire for breast implants, Dr. Garcia may advise against them. Why? Because he knows that a beautifully performed breast lift may be the only improvement you need.
Dr. Garcia is so confident in the rejuvenating effects of his breast lift plastic surgery that he never performs a breast lift and breast augmentation simultaneously. His first step is to restore your breasts to a more youthful position and projection with a breast lift. He asks that you refrain from further surgery for at least six months. If, after that waiting period, you still want to augment your breasts with implants, he is happy to help you do so. But most of his patients are so satisfied with the effects of their breasts lifts, that they decide they don’t need implants after all.
What Happens in a Breast Lift?
Both breast lifts and breast augmentations are major surgical procedures that require general anesthesia, which means you will be asleep during either operation. A breast lift will take about 1.5 to 3.5 hours to accomplish.
The following steps take place during a breast lift:
- Incisions are made above the nipple to indicate the new position of the areola.
- The areola skin is incised, but the nipple is left attached to underlying breast tissue to maintain nipple sensation.
- The areola and nipple are moved to the new position and stitched in place.
- Vertical incisions are made from the bottom of the new areola position to the breast crease.
- Excess skin is removed.
- If needed, the underlying muscles are tightened and stitched into place.
- The skin is re-draped and stitched into place to maintain the new, uplifted breast position and more youthful shape.
If you only need a slight lift, your incisions may be smaller. While there will be scars after your surgery, they will fade over time and can be improved with microneedling and other techniques.
What Happens in a Breast Augmentation?
After the healing period for a breast lift is complete, most of Dr. Garcia’s patients are satisfied with their rejuvenated figures and perkier breasts. If you do wish larger breasts, Dr. Garcia can perform a breast augmentation — also known as breast enhancement and breast enlargement — with breast implants at least six months after your breast lift.
Part of your consultation will involve choosing the type of implants:
Silicone — already filled with silicone gel
Saline — after placement in the body, the forms are filled with saline solution
You will also choose the shape that will look most flattering to your figure:
Round — gives a fuller look with more cleavage
Teardrop — a more natural shape that tapers near the top
During your surgery, the following steps will take place:
- Depending on what type and shape of implant you have, incisions will be made in either the underarm, the crease where the top of the breast meets the chest, or around the aerola.
- The breast tissue is lifted to create a pocket for the implant.
- The implant is inserted either behind the breast tissue or behind both the breast tissue and the breast muscle.
- The incision is closed.
Breast implants take about 1 to 1.5 hours to place.
Recovering From Breast Surgery
Whether you decide on a breast lift only or breast lift with augmentation, your recovery period will be about one month. During the first two weeks, you will not be able to work or do any household chores or cooking. You must arrange for a friend or family member to take you home from surgery. You must also arrange for help the first 2 to 4 weeks. After about a month, you can gradually return to your normal routine.
Step One for Perkier Breasts: A Consultation
You don’t have to know yet whether you want a breast lift only or an augmentation, too. The first step for any cosmetic plastic surgery begins by consulting with an expert. Dr. Garcia is happy to answer your questions and help you decide which breast rejuvenation surgery will allow you to have the firmer, perkier and more youthful breasts you desire.
