facial plastic surgery

When you've done everything “right” – avoided sun, stayed hydrated, eaten plenty of fruits and vegetables as well as high quality proteins and fats, exercised regularly, and been scrupulous about your skin-care regimen – it can be frustrating to nevertheless see unmistakable signs of aging in your mirror. We all know that the sun can damage and age the skin, but time itself ages not only the skin but the underlying, supportive muscles and even the bone. As the matrix that supports the skin begins to thin and atrophy, the skin itself begins to sag.

Two of the most obvious signs of sagging occur on the lower face and neck. As the cheeks fall downward, jowls begin to form. A degraded platysmal muscle in the neck will fail to support the skin, leading to turkey neck and unsightly neck bands.

Luckily, we live in a time when we don't have to succumb to the ravages of age. There are many options to take control of your aging process, from Botox and fillers to smooth out wrinkles, to lasers for resurfacing and tightening, to facial plastic surgery, including various types of facelift (rhytidectomy).

One of the most popular newer procedures that gives you a dramatic improvement while avoiding the significant downtime and expense of a full facelift is a Mini Lift, sometimes called a Lifestyle Lift or Weekend Lift. When you are ready to remedy the early signs of aging, Dr. Julio Garcia at the Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery Clinic near Hendersonville and Las Vegas is available to help you to find the best solution to restoring your natural beauty.

How do you know if a Mini Lift is right for you?

Injectables Are Not Enough

Perhaps you are already familiar with anti-aging procedures and have been keeping your face looking fresh and rejuvenated by augmenting your cheeks with Voluma or Sculptra. While the extra volume in your cheekbone area may be enough to diminish the hollows under your cheeks, you may still be seeing some jowling and neck laxity. There is only so much lift that injectable fillers can give you. If you're ready for a more permanent solution to slight facial slagging, the Mini Lift can last up to 5 to 8 years.

Wrinkles Aren't Your Main Problem Anymore

If you've been using Botox and hyaluronic acid fillers to manage your wrinkles, your skin may be looking smooth and vibrant, and yet...

Your neck is sagging. You have the unmistakable pouches of early jowling at your jawline. You find yourself lifting your skin while gazing in the mirror, wishing it would stay that way.

Unfortunately, neither fillers nor Botox can resolve early sagging. If you no longer worry that much about wrinkles because you are scowling at your jowling, a Mini Lift may be your best solution.

Lasers Don't Tighten Enough

One of the most exciting developments in anti-aging is the advent of laser and light therapies that not only resurface light scars, wrinkles and discoloration of the skin but also stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin, creating a rejuvenating and tightening effect that lasts for up to a year. While these modalities can help to plump and tighten your face, your sagging may be advanced enough that the difference does not feel sufficient. Lasers can continue to be part of your anti-aging armanentarium, but if you are ready for a cleaner jawline and sleeker neck, it's time for a Mini Lift.

Not Ready for a Facelift

Even if you have jowls, neck bands, turkey neck and some sagging, you may not be ready to commit to a full-blown facelift. A facelift, while it provides a dramatic rejuvenation, demands a long period of recovery because it is usually performed under general anesthesia and may involve a number of other surgical procedures, such as fat grafting, platysmaplasty, browlift and blepharoplasty. The acute recovery phase for a facelift lasts at least two weeks. You won't be able to return to your normal daily activities for at least 4 to 6 weeks. Many people cannot afford to forgo work and curtail their activities for that long.

Psychologically, too, the idea of having a facelift may not feel “right.” Perhaps you are still in your 40s or 50s and feel too “young” to commit to an advanced level of facial plastic surgery.

Sagging Is Still in the Early Stages

If your sagging is still in the early stages, with just slight jowling and neck laxity, and you don't feel read for a full rhytidectomy, a Mini Lift is probably the best, most dramatic and longest lasting solution for you. It doesn't matter if you are in your 40s, 50s, 60s or 70s – as long as your skin is still in the early stages of aging -- you will respond well to a Mini Lift.

Unlike a facelift, which treats the midface as well as the lower face, a Mini Lift concentrates on the lower cheeks, jowl, and neck. As in a facelift, it is the muscle – not just the skin -- that gets lifted upward and outward. Anchoring the muscle in a more upward position makes your Mini Lift look more natural and also helps your face resist the constant downward pull of gravity. As in a traditional rhytidectomy, excess skin is trimmed away and the remaining skin is sutured close, with the scar hidden as much as possible behind and in the ear.

Easier Recovery With Mini Lift

The incision is shorter in a Mini Lift, which makes the surgery less traumatic and easier to recover from. The surgery only takes about an hour to 90 minutes perform, as opposed to several hours for a full facelift. The Mini Lift can also be done under local anesthesia, which helps to limit the amount of downtime afterward.

After a Mini Lift, you only need to wear a bandage for the first 48 hours, as opposed to a full week for a traditional rhytidectomy. While you will need to keep your head elevated for the first week and apply icepacks for the first few days, you can usually return to work and most nonstrenuous daily activities within less than a week.

Long-Lasting Results

As long as you continue your healthy habits, sun avoidance, and an appropriate skincare regimen, the rejuvenating effects of your Mini Lift can last up to 8 years. Yearly treatments with lasers can help keep your skin youthful with new production of collagen and elastin, which will help maintain the benefits of your Mini Lift
