One hundred years ago, the average lifespan of men ranged from 46 to 54 years. Fast forward to 2017, advances in health and fitness have extended our lifespan by decades, but have also increased the expectation that we should look young and fit forever. Combine that with a workplace environment that no longer rewards loyalty with a secure job but instead looks for short-term bursts of youthful energy and innovation, and it's no wonder that men are turning to plastic surgery to help them look healthy and strong and stay competitive.
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports that since 1997, there's been a 273% increase in the number of cosmetic plastic surgery procedures performed on men. The top 3 procedures were rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery and liposuction. The reasons most men cited for turning to plastic surgery were wanting to look good, feel good and to get ahead in their careers. Dr. Julio Garcia, a plastic surgeon LV located in Henderson NV, is not only a skilled medical practitioner, but was also trained as an artist. He thus understands how to use the most current and advanced liposuction techniques to sculpt a new body shape that looks toned, strong, athletic and masculine.
What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction refers to the mechanical removal of fat from the body through metal straws (cannulas) attached to a suctioning device. It is typically used to treat stubborn areas of fat that resist reduction through diet and exercise. Liposuction is considered a body-contouring procedure, not a weight-loss method and is therefore best suited to men who are at or near their ideal weight or just slightly overweight. Fatty areas that respond well to liposuction include:
- Abdomen (spare tires)
- Flanks (love handles)
- Thighs (saddlebags)
- Submental fat (double chin)
- Back fat
Liposuction has continued to evolve since it first burst onto the cosmetic plastic surgery scene in the 1980s. We now perform what is called tumescent liposuction, in which a special solution typically composed of saline, sodium bicarbonate, adrenaline and lidocaine is first injected into the area to be treated. The lidocaine numbs the treatment area, the adrenaline helps control bleeding, and the sodium bicarbonate aids in breaking up the fat so that it can be more easily aspirated through the cannulas.
The cannulas used to withdraw the fat have also evolved. The first cannulas were large – up to 1 cm in diameter -- which was why early liposuction often left characteristic ridges and waves. Some of the newest cannulas that use we measure only 0.6 mm. This not only produces less trauma to the body, but also allows for more finely detailed removal of fat and even allows us to sculpt around key muscles to provide more definition and a more athletic look.
Another development is the use of ultrasound waves to liquify the fat and facilitate its removal. During your consultation, you can ask Dr. Garcia if Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL) is right for you.
Benefits of Liposuction
The physical benefits of liposuction are readily apparent: once stubborn, exercise-resistant fat has been suctioned out of the body, it is gone for good. Fat cells do not normally replenish themselves, so as long as you commit to a healthy diet and exercise regimen, your new shape could be lifelong. But there are psychological benefits as well: your more fit and athletic shape can help you feel younger, more in control of your aging process, more competitive and more attractive.
Flatten Your Spare Tire
It can be frustrating to put hours into the gym and still have a “spare tire.” Excess abdominal fat is often genetic and thus will not respond to diet or exercise – no matter how many crunches you do. Liposuction can remove your spare tire and make your abdomen look flat, toned and athletic again.
If you have loose skin and/or muscles in addition to excessive abdominal fat, liposuction alone may not be enough. During your consultation, Dr. Garcia will determine whether you are best served by liposuction alone or by liposuction with abdominoplasty, more commonly known as a tummy tuck. Abdominoplasty not only removes fat, but also tightens the underlying muscle, tightens skin, and removes excess skin.
Etch Six-Pack Abs
Select patients who undergo abdominal liposuction can also have Dr. Garcia create a “six-pack ab” look by sculpting away fat around the abdominal muscles to define them. This is an advanced technique applicable only to candidates who are already in good shape and who have excellent abdominal muscle tone.
Get Rid of Love Handles and Saddlebags
While your loved one may love your love handles, they're one of the hallmarks of middle age. Liposuction can remove love handles (excess fat on the flanks, i.e. above the hips) or on the outside of your thighs (saddlebags) to restore a more toned and youthful physique.
Reduce Man Boobs (Gynecomastia)
Gynectomastia, known more commonly as excess male breast tissue or colloquially as “man boobs” is a condition in which a man has enlarged breasts. This may be caused by a disorder or hormonal imbalance. In most cases of gynecomastia, the male breasts are composed of actual breast tissue, which must be excised through surgery. Often fatty tissue is present as well, which will be treated with liposuction. Rarely will liposuction by itself be sufficient to resolve the condition. If you suffer from gynecomastia, Dr. Garcia can create a more masculine looking chest through surgery and liposuction.
Remove Small Lipomas
Lipomas are benign fatty tumors that can appear almost anywhere on the body. Depending on the size and location, some lipomas will respond to liposuction alone.
Get a Strong Jawline
In addition to contouring the body, facial liposuction can be used to create a more defined jawline and neck. Very small cannulas will not only remove your double chin but can contour your jawline to look stronger and more masculine.
