What Ear Surgery Can Do.
There are occasions where a patient is born with improperly formed ear cartilages.
This can vary from a mere insufficient folding to an ear that protrudes an excessive
amount from the side of the head, to a combination of the above. This birth deformity
at times leads to ridicule from peers, and the need to grow ones hair long in order to hide this problem.
Luckily, with surgical corrective procedures, we can reform many of these cartilage deformities and can also set the ears back so that they do not look as prominent. The average surgical procedure can be done under local anesthesia in a twilight sleep in adults, or general anesthesia in younger patients. A headband is worn for 2 weeks immediately after the surgery and then only worn at night for an additional 2 weeks, Normal activity is slowly returned in 3-4 weeks, and full contact spots after 6 weeks. The postoperative discomfort is slight, and usually controlled easily with oral medications.
