What Eyelid Surgery Can Do.
Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, can remove excess fat and muscle
from both your upper and lower eyelids to give you a more rested, youthful
appearance. Components of the eyelid surgery can include a tightening up of the corner of the lower eyelid
to give a more exotic look, or to correct the weakness of the eyelid, which
occurs with age. At times, especially in younger individuals, a
transconjunctival blepharoplasty is performed where the incisions on the lower
lid are done entirely inside the eyelid. This procedure can remove the
puffiness or bags on the lower eyes with no visible scars. In some individuals
this can be combined with a chemical peel or laser resurfacing of the lower lid
when surgical skin removal is not indicated. Eyelid surgery cannot, however, remove crow's feet or other
wrinkles, correct sagging eyebrows or eliminate dark circles under your
eyes.
Who Might
Consider Eyelid Surgery.
If you have realistic expectations of the surgery and you realize that
eyelid surgery can improve your self-confidence through your enhanced appearance
but may not make your appearance ideal, then eyelid surgery may be for you. Typically
the patients are those whose eye region becomes hooded or tired in appearance.
At times patients complain that it appears as if they did
not sleep well or have the puffiness of allergies when in truth they are fine.
Blepharoplasty can alleviate many of these complaints.
Planning.
Once you decide to have eyelid surgery, Dr. Garcia will explain the entire
procedure to you. Carefully discuss your expectations with Dr. Garcia. He
will be able to tailor the procedure to fit your specific needs. There should
be no mystery involved in the procedure. By the time you're ready for surgery,
you should be as familiar with the procedure as you can. If not, feel free
to ask any questions. Depending on the subtle choices made by the patient, the blepharoplasty
can take between one and two hours. All four eyelids can be done at the same
time, and at times chemical peels or laser resurfacing of the skin can be done
at the same time. It is not uncommon for a patient to have eyelid surgery when
they are doing a facelift or a forehead lift, or other cosmetic procedures.
Precautions.
Remember that eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure and as such carries
with it an element of risk. Although Dr. Garcia is a talented, accomplished
plastic surgeon, sometimes complications do occur. These include temporary
blurred vision, swelling in the corner of the eyelids, or slight asymmetry
in healing. Rare instances of patients having difficulty closing their eyes
to sleep or a drooping of the lower lid may occur as well. These scenarios usually resolve
on their own, but may require some eye drops for a short period of time. In these rare
instances, these complications can be treated with further surgery.
Preparation.
Dr. Garcia will give you specific guidelines on what to eat and drink
and what vitamins or medications you should take or avoid prior to your
surgery. If you smoke, quit at least two weeks before and after surgery.
You may not be able to wear your contact lenses for about a week if you
do use them, so please have regular glasses available for use after your
fo eyelid surgery.
Procedure.
Typically, eyelid surgery begins with a pair of incisions: one along the creases
of the upper lids, and one directly below the lashes of the lower lid. The skin
is separated from the fatty tissue below, and this excess is then removed. Excess
skin is trimmed away and the incisions are closed with very fine sutures. Younger
patients may undergo a different procedure for their lower lids where the incision
is made inside the lower lid. Tightening of the corner of the eye will cause a
little more swelling than a normal blepharoplasty, but usually resolves in just
a few days. The sutures are typically removed in five to seven days and light
activity, which is recommended for the first two weeks is advanced during the
third and fourth week so that by one month the patient is back to all routine activities.
