A forehead lift, also called a brow lift, is a facial plastic surgery procedure that smooths wrinkles away on your forehead and lifts the tissue around your eyes and eyebrows for a more alert, youthful appearance.
Considering Forehead Lift Surgery
A forehead lift may be appropriate for you if you have:
- Droopy eyebrows that hood your upper eyelids
- Vertical forehead creases, called frown lines, that give you a constant “angry” look
- Horizontal wrinkles across the forehead
Dr. Garcia most often performs forehead lifts on men and women in their forties to sixties, but patients of any age may benefit from the procedure. If you have experienced balding, a receding hairline, or previous eyelid surgery, the procedure can be modified to accommodate your needs.
Preparing for Brow Lift Surgery
In consultation with Dr. Garcia, you will discuss the entire brow lift procedure and address all of your questions or concerns. You will be given instructions on exactly how to prepare for your procedure and what to expect during your recovery.
The procedure can be performed in the traditional open style or endoscopically with smaller incisions.
The endoscopic brow lift, performed by Dr. Garcia since 1993, does not give the surgeon as much control during the surgery and does not provide the longer lasting results of open style surgery.
Dr. Garcia has modified the open technique to make an incision further back on the scalp, which avoids scalp numbness, hair loss and cowlicks. Dr. Garcia’s technique gives 20-25 points of fixation for the brow lift for more predictable, longer lasting results.
Although Dr. Garcia has not published this advanced technique, many doctors have traveled to see the procedure being performed and learn to avoid the pitfalls of traditional forehead lifts.
Knowing the Risks
As a surgical procedure, brow lifts come with risks. Dr. Garcia is a highly trained, experienced plastic surgeon. However, complications do happen. These may include scarring, hair loss, or an altered ability to raise your eyebrows or wrinkle your forehead. All of these complications can be remedied by additional surgery.
Understanding the Procedure
For a forehead lift, your hair will not be shaved. Instead the hair surrounding the incision sites is held back by rubber bands. Dr. Garcia makes an incision from your ears across the top of your forehead. The incision is darted in specific places instead of a single straight line to accommodate the particular shape of your skull.
Dr. Garcia separates the skin from the underlying muscles and tissue to remove excess tissue, then he redrapes the forehead skin and trims excess skin. Dr. Garcia may smooth areas of bone down to soften the appearance of the brow to leave you with a less severe appearance.
The incision is closed with sutures or clips. Your face and hair are washed and your forehead is bandaged. The bandages and the small drainage tube are removed the following day in the office where we once again wash your hair.
You will then be released to return to light activity and wash your hair daily. Sutures will be removed one week after surgery. By four to six weeks, you can return to normal activities, including coloring your hair. You may want to subtly change your hairstyle so your friends will attribute your new look to that and keep your surgical procedure confidential.
