What a Forehead Lift Can Do.
A browlift, or forehead lift, is a procedure that can enhance your appearance
by giving you a smooth forehead. Although the procedure cannot stop the aging
process, it can give you a more youthful appearance. It accomplishes this, yet so much more,
because along with the smoothing out of wrinkles it will lift the tissues
around your eyes and raise the eyebrows also, giving the patient a more rested,
less tired, more alert appearance.
Who Might Consider a Forehead Lift.
Most forehead lifts are performed on men and women in their forties to sixties,
but it can benefit people of any age. People with inherited conditions, like
droopy eyelids, may benefit as well. At times, some individuals have somewhat of an angry looking due to hyperactive
muscles between their eyes. Although Botox injections have become popular for
this condition, a forehead lift or browlift can permanently ease the tension in
those muscles, avoiding the constant wrinkling in the area which will lead to
permanent creases in the skin. If you've experienced balding or a receding
hairline, or if you've had previous eyelid surgery, the procedure can be modified
to accomodate your needs. Also, remember that although men can undergo successful
forehead lifts, it may take especially careful planning to hide the scars.
Planning.
Once you decide to have a forehead lift, Dr. Garcia will explain the entire
procedure to you. Discuss with him all of your expectations, and don't be
afraid to ask any questions. There should be no mystery involved in the procedure.
By the time you're ready for surgery, you should be as familiar with the procedure
as you can. Forehead lifts/browlifts can be done in the traditional open style or endoscopically
with smaller incisions. The endoscopic forehead lift, although more frequently
done in the recent past does give improvements, but in Dr. Garcia's experience
(he has done endoscopic forehead lifts since 1993) does not give the doctor as much
control, and does not seem to have as long lasting results as an open technique.
Hair loss and numbness were complaints of the old fashioned browlifts, but Dr.
Garcia has modified that technique after extensive anatomical study and now
does the open procedure with an incision further back on the scalp, which
avoids the scalp numbness, avoids hair loss and cowlicks, and gives 20-25 points
of fixation for the browlift so that the results will be more predictable and
long lasting. Although Dr. Garcia has not published his technique for browlifts,
many doctors have traveled to see the actual procedure being done, to learn how
to avoid the pitfalls of traditional forehead lifts.
Precautions.
Remember that a forehead lift is a surgical procedure
and as such carries with it an element of risk. Although Dr. Garcia is a talented,
accomplished plastic surgeon, sometimes complications do occur. These include
excess scarring, hair loss, or an altered ability to raise your eyebrows or
wrinkle your forehead. These potential complications are all quite rare, but Dr. Garcia believes in informing
the patient of the risks so that the patient can make a proper decision about
the forehead lift. All of these complications can be remedied by additional
surgery.
Preparation.
Dr. Garcia
will give you specific guidelines on what to eat and drink and what vitamins
or medications you should take or avoid prior to your forehead lift or brow lift surgery.
If you smoke,
quit at least two weeks before and after surgery. Smoking impedes the healing
process and may increase scarring, thus leading to less than optimal results.
To preview what a forehead lift may do for you, stand before a mirror, place
the palms of your hands above your eyebrows at the outer edge and tighten
the skin upward.
Procedure.
Your head is not shaved during a forehead lift. Instead, the hair behind and
in front of the incision line is held away from the incision by rubber bands.
The incision is made from the level of your ears across the top of your forehead.
This incision is not a straight line, but has darts in it designed to the particular
shape of your skull. The dissection of the forehead is then done past the level
of the eyebrows to release the muscle around the eye, which pulls the forehead
tissue down. Excess muscle and tissue is then removed from underneath. The forehead skin
is then pulled back into place, and extra skin is trimmed away. At
times, and if indicated, Dr. Garcia will smooth areas of bone down to soften the
appearance of the brow region, leaving the patient with a softer look of the
forehead than they had before the browlift. The incision
is closed with sutures or clips. Your face and hair are washed and your forehead
is bandaged. The
bandages and the small drainage tube are removed the following day in the
office where we once again wash your hair. The patient is then released home
where light activity is done, and the patient is allowed to wash their hair
daily. A return to the office is in one week when the sutures or staples are
removed. At that time the activity level is slightly increased so that by the
four to six week time period after the browlift, the patient has returned to
all of their normal activities. The patient can proceed with coloring their
hair or having a curl placed four weeks after the forehead lift. We at times
suggest a subtle hairstyle change so that when your friends see you, they will
attribute your new appearance to that, rather than your forehead lift, keeping
the surgical procedure a confidential issue.
