Liposuction Las Vegas

Liposuction, alternatively referred to as liposculpture, lipectomy, or simply lipo, is a body contouring procedure that removes fat from small areas of your body that are difficult to target with diet and exercise alone. The body has a propensity to store fat in certain areas that are resistant to traditional fat control and weight loss methods, and liposuction is a method of surgically entering those areas and suctioning the difficult fat away. There are many reasons why certain people elect to undergo the procedure, and, for many in Nevada and across the country, our Las Vegas plastic surgeon, Dr. Julio Garcia, and the lipo professionals on our team are a clear choice for success.

How Liposuction Works

Educating yourself on the procedure is paramount to making sure you understand how it works, what the limitations are, and what you can expect from a typical operation so that you can be more comfortable going in. First, some statistics—liposuction is one of the most common aesthetic procedures performed in the United States, with more than 300,000 such operations being performed yearly. Though not a treatment for obesity in and of itself or a substitute for diet and exercise, lipo can be helpful changing your body's shape and contours.

Both men and women may undergo liposuction, but, the areas they choose to target may be different. Men are most likely to have liposuction performed around the waist, sometimes in conjunction with a tummy tuck, or they will use liposuction to reduce the appearance of Gynecomastia, more commonly known as enlarged male breasts. Women, on the other hand, also have liposuction performed on the stomach, but are also likely to have the operation done under the chin, around the hips, or under the arms as well.

Liposuction is done under anesthetic, and patients may be put to sleep for the duration of the procedure, which may last several hours. Following anesthetic, the operation will begin with a small incision in the treatment area. The doctor will inject a small amount of fluid into the area to rupture fat cells and make them easier to remove. Using a cannula, a hollow tube specifically designed for liposuction, the doctor breaks up deep layers of fat and suctions them into the machine attached to the cannula. Furthermore, during liposuction, you will be given intravenous fluids to balance the fluid lost during the procedure.

Post operation, you should expect to return to work a few days after your procedure and resume most normal activities within two weeks. You will experience some swelling and bruising in the treatment area. This will begin to subside after a few days, but can last several weeks until you see the full results of your new contours. The fat cells removed via lipo are gone permanently, though, you are heavily encouraged to maintain your healthy lifestyle so that your results are long lasting.

Risks Involved With Liposuction

Liposuction, like any major surgery, is an operation that inherently comes with some level of risk. Dr. Julio Garcia is a well-trained and experienced plastic surgeon, but sometimes complications occur. Liposuction complications can include an adverse reaction to anesthesia, bleeding, fluid accumulation, injury to the skin, infection, or excessive fluid loss. Rippling or baggy skin, asymmetry or pigmentation changes can occur as well. Know, however, that the risk of complications arising is associated with the size of the operation and the skill of the surgeon involved—our staff is dedicated to mitigating these possibilities as much as possible.

Who Should Consider Liposuction?

Recall that liposuction is not a weight loss method and is not design to provide direct physical health benefits. Results are subtle, as opposed to dramatic, and it's important that any candidate for liposuction be in good physical condition. Those with circulatory issues or weakened immune systems should consider options, and it goes without saying that any prospective candidate for the procedure should be over 18 years old.

That being said, liposuction is an option for those that have not achieved their desired results through healthy lifestyle change and wish to change their body contours. Candidates for lipo are often individuals of normal weight who have stubborn fat limited to a few areas.

Additionally, they will usually have excellent skin tone and elasticity, which will allow the skin to mold itself into the new contours post-procedure. Those without the necessary elasticity run the risk of being left with loose-looking skin around their treatment area.

Preparing For Your Liposuction

Before their procedure, anyone considering lipo should weigh the pros and cons, and discuss how to prepare with the doctor. He may recommend additional procedures, such as tummy tuck or ultrasound assisted lipoplasty, if they would give you results that align more closely with your goals.

Dr. Garcia will also explain how liposuction works and what to expect before and after your procedure. Be sure to ask all of your questions during your consultation.
