Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that removes fat from small areas of your body that are difficult to target with diet and exercise alone.
Liposuction may be appropriate for your cosmetic enhancement goals if you:
- Are at or near your ideal weight
- Have firm, elastic skin
- Suffer with pockets of fat in problem areas
Liposuction is not a weight loss solution. It is intended to refine your body contours. Just a small amount of fat removal with liposuction can create a dramatic effect in your contours.
Preparing for Liposuction
During your liposuction consultation with Dr. Garcia, you will discuss your goals and what you can expect to achieve with liposuction. He may recommend additional procedures, such as tummy tuck or ultrasound assisted lipoplasty, if they would give you results that align more closely with your goals.
Dr. Garcia will also explain how liposuction works and what to expect before and after your procedure. Be sure to ask all of your questions during your consultation. There should be no mystery about your procedure.
Knowing the Risks
Liposuction is a surgical procedure and that inherently comes with some risk. Dr. Garcia is a well-trained and experienced plastic surgeon, but sometimes complications occur. Liposuction complications can include fluid accumulation, injury to the skin, infection, or excessive fluid loss. Rippling or baggy skin, asymmetry or pigmentation changes can occur as well.
Understanding the Procedure
Liposuction begins with a small incision in the treatment area. Dr. Garcia injects a small amount of fluid into the area to rupture fat cells and make them easier to remove. Using a cannula, a hollow tube specifically designed for liposuction, Dr. Garcia breaks up deep layers of fat and suctions them into the machine attached to the cannula. During the procedure you will be given intravenous fluids to balance the fluid lost during the procedure.
You should expect to return to work a few days after your procedure and resume most normal activities within two weeks. You will experience some swelling and bruising in the treatment area. This will begin to subside after a few days, but can last several weeks until you see the full results of your new contours.
Fat cells removed by liposuction are gone forever. This isn’t a free license to eat cheesecake, but it does mean that if you maintain a healthy lifestyle, your results should be permanent.
