What Liposuction Can Do.
Liposuction is a procedure that removes
fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise. Remember that liposuction
alone cannot correct dimpled areas of skin, or cellulite. This condition
can be improved by other procedures, however.
Who
Might Consider Liposuction.
No surgery can change your looks to ideal, but liposuction can improve your
appearance and increase your self-confidence. If you are of relatively normal
weight, have firm, elastic skin, and have pockets of problem fat in specific
areas, then you may be a candidate for liposuction. Liposuction
is the only way to do “spot reduction”. Usually when people lose weight they
lose it all over their body, but liposuction removes fat from only a small
area. It is for this reason that a relatively small amount of fat removal with
liposuction can lead to such a large and visible contour correction. One also
needs to know that if done after puberty ceases, all fat cells that are removed
during liposuction are permanently removed. This does not mean that one can eat
a cheesecake everyday after their surgery, but if one remains on a good diet
after their liposuction, their contour changes should remain forever. Overall, you should
be healthy both mentally and physically, and have realistic expectations
of the procedure.
Planning.
Once you decide to undergo liposuction, Dr. Garcia will explain the entire
procedure to you. Discuss with him all of your expectations, and don't be
afraid to ask any questions. There should be no mystery involved in the
procedure. By the time you're ready for surgery, you should be as familiar
with the procedure as you can.
Precautions.
Remember that liposuction is a surgical procedure and as such carries with
it an element of risk. Although Dr. Garcia is a talented, accomplished plastic
surgeon, sometimes complications do occur. These include rare instances
of fluid accumulation, injury to the skin, infection, or excessive fluid
loss. Rippling or baggy skin, asymmetry or pigmentation changes can occur
as well. You can significantly reduce your chances of complications by carefully
following Dr. Garcia's instructions both before and after surgery.
Preparation.
Dr. Garcia will give you specific guidelines on what to eat and drink
and what vitamins or medications you should take or avoid prior to your
surgery.
Procedures.
Liposuction begins with a small incision at the treatment area. A
specific amount of fluid is then infused into the area to be aspirated so that
the cells can rupture and make removing the fat easier. A hollow tube,
or cannula, is then inserted into the incision. The cannula is attached to a
machine that creates a vacuum. The cannula is then used to break up deep layers
of fat and suction them away. In some cases, additional incisions will be made.
Throughout the procedure, you'll be given intravenous fluids to balance the
fluid lost during the operation.
