Male breast reduction, called gynecomastia surgery, is a male plastic surgery procedure to reduce excess breast tissue in men and boys. Overdeveloped breasts in males can be caused by hormonal changes, obesity, heredity, or the use of certain prescription medications.
Considering Male Breast Reduction
Excessive male breast tissue can leave males feeling less masculine and more uncomfortable in their own bodies. Male breast reduction may be appropriate if:
- Your breast development has stabilized
- You cannot correct breast development with alternative medical treatments
- You are at or near a healthy body weight for your body type
Preparing for Male Breast Reduction
Meeting with Dr. Garcia is the best way to determine if you are a good candidate for male breast reduction and if it is the right procedure for you at this time. The development of male breasts can be caused by several factors, and the remedy for you may not be surgery. Your condition may be corrected by switching medications or focusing on attaining a healthy weight.
In consultation with Dr. Garcia, you can ask all of your questions in a safe, non-judgmental environment. Dr. Garcia understands the stigma that is associated with the development of male breasts and treats this sensitive topic with the respect you deserve.
Knowing the Risks
Male breast reduction surgery comes with certain risks. As with any major surgery, there is the risk of anesthesia complications or infections. Dr. Garcia will review risks with you during your consultation and address your concerns about the safety of the procedure.
Understanding the Procedure
Male breast reduction is performed by making an incision in the breast and excising the excess tissue or combining the surgical procedure with liposuction to remove excess fatty tissue.
Typically in recovering from male breast reduction, you will need to be on light duty activities for two weeks and will be able to increase back to your normal activity levels during weeks three and four.
Gynecomastia surgery is a permanent solution as long as the offending cause of your condition does not resurface.
